Oh, you've got a lot to make to up to me, starting with breakfast in bed. However, I enjoyed getting to spend time with younger you. You were adorable.
I've seen a couple of movies about it. Heard about Capone's St. Valentines Day Massacre --Absolutely demons and by that, I mean I heard about it from demons-- and am absolutely unclear whether Saint Valentine was actually real, but I assume you're asking more about the holiday than the massacre or the saint. In that case, For the first time, I'm beginning to understand the holiday's appeal.
I see you're not one to pull any punches. And I'm sure that I was. Just hope you can forgive me if I don't remember it all that well. What happened foggy at best, like a distant memory.
No. Well, yes. Right. No massacres. No Saints. None of the commercial stuff. Just a day I am hoping we can celebrate together.
Okay, yes she probably should have told Sam the moment she found the books about his life in Gracie's bookshop. Some morally upstanding people would say that she shouldn't have even read them because they were too personal. However, Ruby has made few bones about being morally grey and she didn't think there was any harm in reading the books.
She'd been enjoying the books until she'd gotten to the ones that featured her. She'd gotten even more irritated with the series when it'd had continued after her timeline to include the bitch that lied about being her. Once she'd started reading, she couldn't stop despite the fact that it had hurt and made her angry. When she finally finished it, she wasn't even sure what she wanted to do with that information. She knew that Sam hadn't lived through it yet and she knew there was a chance that Sam wouldn't ever know any of it. Of course, that seemed less likely when Ruby took into account how often Sam had been back to their world.
In the end, she'd left the book for him on his (hers-their) nightstand with a note tucked into the cover that said: Come find me when you finish it.
She won't be hard to find. She's gone to get fries but after that she'll hang around the lesser used parts of the bunker knitting and reading a trashy romance novel.
Re: Full Frontal | AKA Ruby finds the Supernatural Novels
Sam had been getting used to Ruby leaving her trashy romance novels around for him to read highlighted portions she made. Almost instantly he could tell there was something different about the Supernatural novel she left for him. Call it a feeling in his gut. Call it whatever you like. He was right. When he started reading it the night he got back, it didn't take long to get to what he thought concerned her the most — Ruby. Or rather, 'Ruby,' the demon that was going to pose as her in his future. He read everything concerning her until the story switched to a point of time for Dean and that's where he put down the book. Ruby's note was clear and so he sought her out.
Finding her wasn't the most difficult thing, no. Sam's first inclination was to check the lesser used parts of the bunker but ultimately he would find her sitting at the Houndsooth waiting on an order of fries. In a manner similar to their first meeting, this time he sat across from her. He did not order when the waitress asked what beverage he would like to start with. "Sorry, we'll need some time first," he said and motioning to himself and Ruby. There isn't much protocol about how to go about this since they both knew but now they both had more vivid, disturbing imagery. Sam wished he could shake his out of his head. That was not going to help, um, but talking would. "I, uh. I am here... to talk about whatever was it I just read in that novel you left me."
Full Frontal | AKA Ruby finds the Supernatural Novels
It's flirting. Plus, she likes to think about him reading the things she leaves for him. Regardless, this is an entirely different sort of thing. Ruby isn't prone to tears or even getting her feelings hurt easily, but reading the book had hurt. She'd had to remind herself that that Sam hadn't known what this one does; that Sam hadn't ever really gotten to know her.
She'd needed a distraction to keep herself from interrupting Sam before he'd read the book. When Sam does sit down across from her, Ruby has a hard time looking into his eyes. She fiddles with the straw in her milkshake, looking up when Sam speaks to her. "I'm not her," she tells him. "You know that, right?"
Full Frontal | AKA Ruby finds the Supernatural Novels
Sometimes the passages she leaves for him to read seem a little more than innocent flirting but he gets the bigger picture. This particular time is certainly something different to those other times. And. And Sam does let his feelings get the best of him while he read the book. He got angry at the fake Ruby for lying to him and at the same time equal parts angry at himself for being deceived, afraid and disappointed. The only thing able to pull him out of that was the reminder to himself that Ruby left him the book. She was going through something as well.
Sam picks up her inability to look him straight his eyes rather instantaneously and, closing his eyes momentarily, he tries to trick part of his brain into thinking he understands. It's a little bit of a punch to the gut though. In any case, he waits for her to speak patiently and formulates his own carefully. "I know," he starts. "I know. Listen to me, knowing what I know now, I... I promise would never make that mistake. Twice."
Oh, Sammy boy, you know you have to live through the deceit. It's bitter medicine to have to admit to himself.
Sam has been a little distant the last few days (maybe longer) and Ruby knows that something is going on in his head. She also knows that the best thing to do is to let Sam figure it out. He'll tell her when he's ready to tell her. She's curious though, but not worried. Not yet. In fact, she's not entirely certain that whatever is in Sam's head isn't about Mother's Day. It's a big one for him; he's never had Mary around for Mother's Day. After dinner, she gives him a little space and retreats to their room. She's got a blanket to knit and she's not going to worry about what's going on in Sam's head.
It's nothing Ruby did or said if that's in question and, fortunately, Ruby seems to understand him well enough to see when he is gathering his thoughts. Yes, it takes him a while. It takes a few conversations with John and Dean, not just the time to think alone, to figure out now is as good as any time to talk to her about it. She's not wrong to think it has something to do with Mother's Day. His distance all started because Mother's Day rolled around and he used it as an excuse to keep busy at first. With the evening over, he enters their shared room and sits on the bed next to her, focus taking a second to look at her and not her blanket.
"You left in a hurry," he tells her to ease himself into conversation really. "I thought we could somewhere a little more private and talk." He gestures his head to the door as they both know sometimes their room isn't private.
It's not really. Things have been pretty normal and practically giddy between them. Mostly she thinks Sam's habit of overthinking everything has got him tied in knots. Fortunately, she's good at untying those knots, or at least she usually is. She looks up when he steps into the room and smiles slightly at him. "Hey, Puppy," she says in greeting.
She tilts her head to one side and shrugs. "It seemed like a family time," she answers. Her brows go up a bit at his request to talk somewhere more privately and she sets her knitting aside. "Okay. The apartment or the cabin?" Okay, so it's clear this isn't a sex-venture, but the cabin is close. Sam might be able to see a touch of worry on Ruby's face, in the slight furrow of her brow.
No, it's not far from the truth really. He finds himself tied in knots with her on more than one occasion when it comes to them. Things are definitely good the way they are and it's not something he'd like to damper. Her smile always has a way of bringing him to. "Hey," he clears his throat.
He considers her family but he can understand how she might feel that way. He shakes his head a little. "I don't think I need to tell you that you're one of us." But he will leave it at that. The last thing he is here to do is force her way of thinking or discount her need for time. He watches the worry grow over her and waves his hand for her to forget it. "Or we can talk here, too," he expresses to indict his complete change of his mind about going somewhere private. His hand moves to place itself over hers.
"There's just... I've been thinking a lot about us and the future and... and making roots here. I think you should know where I stand. Just like I want to know where you stand. I mean, we haven't had a chance to talk about it... since you moved in." Sam will get to mentioning wanting kids but right now is making it so she knows what is on his mind. It feels dishonest to make her worry.
Sam had assured Dean that his number hadn't changed when his brother warned him to stay in touch. As the facts were: he'd only be a couple hours away (by flight), and things were quietly as far as new leads went. It was the perfect time, he thought, to take a break and step back to go see Ruby for a few days.
After retrieving his baggage, he took out his phone to send a text letting Ruby know he landed.
Have my bags with me. Where do you want to meet?
All he knew is that she was holed up close by and the both of them had forgotten to talk about if she was meeting him at the airport or if he'd continue on to her designation by renting a vehicle.
Several more hours if Dean has to drive there, but it's doable and Dean is hoping Sam will return a little less cranky. It is a good time and Dean has a horror movie marathon planned while Sam is gone.
Instead of picking Sam up from the airport, Ruby chose to find them a hotel room. She's got one a little ways from the airport with a giant bed and bathtub. It's the perfect place to hide away for a few days. It's been weeks since Ruby has seen Sam for more than a few hours so a few days seems decadent; hence the bathtub, the luxurious hotel room, and the wine that she knows Sam likes. Ruby doesn't realize it, but it all classifies as practically romantic.
In response to his text, Ruby sends him the address of the hotel (not motel, it seems an important distinction; after all, he has to go through a lobby to get there) and the room number. She might have inadvertently set up a romantic get away, but she's still Ruby and she doesn't really have a grasp of sexy lingerie yet so when he knocks on the door, she'll answer wearing one of his tee shirts. She's been here for a few hours familiarizing herself with the area and getting comfortable in the room.
Yes, unfortunately, a drive would make it much slower to meet up with Sam
if there was trouble. Sam returning less cranky is absolutely a guarantee.
It's been weeks since he last saw Ruby and he needs this trip about as much
as he needs air in his lungs. It may or may not have been Sam that gently
put the movie marathon in his brother's head. He left behind supplies so
Dean wouldn't miss him.
They must be linked because Sam had the same idea to bring Ruby a little
something. He boxed it up so it was safe for the flight in his carry on.
What was it? Something Dean and himself picked up from a case a week ago.
Maybe it is classified as stolen evidence. A witch's diary full of odds and
ends about going unnoticed among potions and spells. Seemed right to bring
it as a gift rather than burn it. The hotel is absolutely romantic and when
she sends him the address he smiles, unable to hide it from any passersby.
It was definitely a good surprise.
He texted back almost right away telling her his eta and 'see you soon'.
The cab he hailed was a short ride and after checking quickly with the
front desk if the elevator needed a key access (it didn't), he headed on to
the room. He knocks and she opens the door. Lingerie meant nothing.
Something about always meeting her again while she wore a shirt of his was
a turn on in itself. "You... look good.
Can I come in?" He took a breath in between the two sentences. His chest
feels tight but not uncomfortable in her presence. He steps closer to her
and past the threshold. His face grows close to hers, eyes locked on,
breath fresh like mint. Yes, this is how they greet each other now.
Nothing is going to go wrong and Dean won't have to drive anywhere. The town is quiet and there will be no shop talk this weekend. They may not even leave the hotel room. Ruby needs this time with Sam just as much. She'll be glad that Sam took pains to make sure Dean didn't drive Sam crazy with texts and phone calls.
His gift will be very appreciated. It would be a shame to burn it, especially if there's anything useful in it. In a way, Ruby was thinking about romance, but she was thinking of it as 'making this weekend special'. It's all the same thing; it's more her perception of herself: Ruby isn't romantic.
When he asks if he can come in, she steps to the side just enough to allow him to slip inside. Rather than answer him immediately, Ruby goes up on her tip-toes, arms wrapping around his neck as she pulls him into a kiss. As the kiss deepens, she wraps her legs around his waist. When the kiss breaks for a breath, she says "I'll trade you later." He'll get a shirt back that smells like her and she'll get a fresh Sam-smelling one.
Sam was numb and there was a lot running through his brain. He regretted siding with Dean -- all the confusion with yesterday being his brother's last day still running through his veins -- and leaving Ruby in the devil's trap as it had a large part in everything that went down. As an amends, he stashed her body in a freezer in the closed convenience store. He came back after Dean was buried. The door to the freezer was left open as he sat inside and Sam sat against a wall close by her empty host.
"Ruby, I don't know where you are, but if you can hear me...
Ruby had been hurt when Sam had left her locked in the trap, but it hadn't surprised her. It was Dean's last day and Sam would have done anything for him that day. She had been planning on giving Sam an ass-chewing for it the next time she saw him, but then everything had gone to Hell. Lilith had forced her way in and taken over, leaving Ruby to be a witness to everything she'd done in her body.
As far as amends go, it's not a bad way to start. When Lilith had fled, Ruby had been knocked out of her body. She was pretty sure she'd been unconscious for a while and when she'd woken up, she was disoriented. After sharing a body with Lilith, the last thing she wanted was to share a body with someone else. Both bodies were gone when she'd come to and she wanted to find Sam. Once she did that, she'd find another body if need be.
Sam might not have realized it at the time, but his voice helped Ruby find him. She'd been very pleasantly to surprised to find her body on ice with Sam in the room. She races into her body and sits up with a cough. Her eyes are solid black. "It's about time. I hope you washed the taste of Lilith out of your mouth."
Some piece of him knew he still had the abilities Azazel's blood offered him and that's why he tried reaching out by talking to Ruby while picturing her in his mind. There had been two smoke trails that fled her body when Lilith ejected herself out. The safest bet seemed to follow the one that remained as a cloud in the sky and keep her body near it.
The cough drew his attention instantly and Sam stood up, a few steps closer before pausing. "Ruby, it's, it's really you." Little as it may be, a smile forms with a sigh of relief. "No, yeah. I wasn't thinking about that. I think I need a drink." As a solution to the taste of Lilith in his mouth for one, but also to rid himself of the bad taste of everything else.
Ruby reaches up to push her hair behind her ear. "I need a blanket and a bubble bath, but I'll settle for a blanket and share that drink with you." She gets to her feet gingerly, still a little woozy from everything. "You can also say you're sorry for letting Dean put me in that devil's trap."

All flirting aside, it was easily the best New Year's eve I've ever had.
