weirddreams A stanford law student and a bartender

Ruby was only three years older than Sam, but she'd moved to Lawrence, Kansas after she'd graduated high school, which is why no one had known who she was when she'd shown up to Sam's prom. They'd met at the library and had started meeting there regularly. Ruby waitressed at one of the diners in town and Sam had been sheepish about asking her to Prom. In fact, she'd practically asked him. At that point, they'd become inseparable. When he'd applied to Stanford, they'd started talking about running away together. It'd been romantic and a little bit of a dream: a dream that had come to fruition when Sam had gotten his acceptance letter.
They'd found a little apartment together within walking distance to the campus. It hadn't been difficult for Ruby to get a job as a bartender in a little local owned bar. The owner was an older Polish man who had been charmed by the fact that Ruby knew Polish (thanks to her grandmother). The bar was just a couple of blocks from the campus and a local favorite.
All in all, Stanford seem to be suiting both Ruby and Sam. They were adorkable nerds in love. The most difficult part was that Ruby often worked late nights and Sam had to be up early for classes.
Ruby had just gotten to work and placed an order for a couple of burgers and fries, knowing that Sam will be showing up soon to eat dinner with her while she works. It's part of the day that she looks forward to and she's pretty sure he does too.
"New semester," Mr. Wiśniewski says as he walks into the bar from the back office. "That'll mean things little bit more rowdy tonight," he warns Ruby.
She smiles and shakes her head. "It's okay Mr. W. I've got and Sam will be up here. He looks surprisingly intimidating when he needs to for a puppy."
"It's he so tall," Mr. Wiśniewski tells her, patting her on the shoulder as he hands over a bank bag full of cash so she can stock her cash register.

Ruby, will you run away with me to Standard?'
Ruby had picked the apartment since Sam had been busy applying for scholarships and doing his registration into classes early on. He loved the space she found though. It was not seedy, which helped. It was also fully furnished which was a blessing. His first impression of the space was that it was comfortable. Plus the bed was just right for both of them. Ruby was also fortunate to find a job quickly and at a place close by the campus and he was happy for her. Mr. Wiśniewski treated them like family before long.
Yeah, the only unfortunate part was their differing hours. Some days they would completely miss if Sam didn't learn he was welcome to study in the bar if he could handle a little noise. Suffice to say, growing up with an older brother prepared him for that. He's shown up every single evening for diner with his girl since. He looks forward to seeing that last stretch of sidewalk when he walks over directly from his last class, pull open the door and sit up front and center before any other customers walk in.
The burgers and fries waiting for him are only the sweetest gesture. There's a thing he always does to flirt with her and it's pull out his wallet to tip her a twenty right on the counter as a soon as he has a seat. "Tip for the beautiful bartender." He's aware she might still be setting her her cash float and, willing to wait, simply smiles and makes eye contact where ever he can catch it.

Ruby is a little bit bossy and she'd liked being in control of things like where they live. It had helped her feel like she belongs here with Sam (and there's no doubt that she's belonged with Sam right from the very beginning) instead of being an interloper. It's a great apartment: small, a little shabby but in a comfortable home-y way. It'd been taken care of and had belonged to a little grandma at one time, which meant it didn't smell like beer or pot or any of the other things that typical college apartments often smell like.
That's one of the perks of her job: Sam is welcome to study there. She'd be far crankier than she already is to the customers if she weren't seeing Sam on an every day basis. As it is, when she is cranky, all she has to do is look up to see Sam there bent over his books and scribbling notes to make her smile. Yes, she's still cranky about the jerk customer, but she's smiling despite it.
Ruby notices when Sam comes in and looks up to smile at him before finishing setting things up then walks over to pick up the twenty (sometimes she wonders if it's the same twenty they pass back and forth between them) and tucks it into her bra before leaning on her elbows on the bar to kiss Sam hello. "My favorite customer. The best tipping one too," she says. "Beer, soda or water?" she asks. "how was your day?"

It's a lesser known fact about Sam but he loves when Ruby gets bossy. He hadn't minded when she took control of where they lived. In fact, what mattered most to him in the situation was that Ruby was comfortable and able to feel she belonged in their space. For him, all he cared about was having her around and being where she was. That was enough. What he also didn't mind is how Ruby took charge and decorated their place. Anything she did would always be home.
Likewise. Her job is much harder than his by far, but at the end of the day his spirits lift when he can see her again. He finds he only gets a little cranky or annoyed when people hit on her and don't take no for an answer. That's neither here nor now though.
His day is no different than most days but he likes when she asks, smiling the slightest bit wider because of her bright smile. Sometimes they pass the same twenty back and forth to each other, but not this time. That one went to groceries during his extended lunch break. A little bit of his attention falls on her tucking the bill into her bra but he turns his eyes on her again and kisses her hello back. "Yeah. End of the week so I got paid for my tutoring. I can afford to tip my favorite bartender." So there's some good news for them. This tradition of theirs is also his favorite way of letting her know everything that's his is hers. He doesn't have to think too much on his beverage of choice, but he plays a little more, if not just to talk to her before putting his mind back on his studies. "Hm, yeah... I'll take your best recommendation to pair with my meal and... Legal Research: Step by Step." He turns his book bag and pulls out the textbook in question.

It might be lesser known to everyone else, but Ruby is well aware of it. She'd wanted the place to look and feel like theirs, but Sam hadn't had the time to do anything. It had seemed natural for her to take over.
Her job might be physically more demanding, but his is definitely more mentally difficult. She's generally able to handle the people who hit on her as well as the ones who don't want to take no for an answer. He needn't worry and if she's not able to handle it, he's there most of the time.
Sure, his day is often the same, but she still cares about how he handles it and how it makes him feel. She appreciates it when he's able to do the grocery shopping. He's a lot better at it than she is really. She tends to grab things that aren't healthy like a bag of powdered sugar donuts. "Did Kaylee's mom put it in your back pocket?" she's teasing him, but it does happen from time to time. "I'll put on a pot of coffee," she tells him with a grin as she gets him a glass of water as well.

Anyhow, she brightens up his days up towards the end no matter what. He got all the necessary food that's been used up for their fridge today. He wouldn't say he's better. Sam somehow has just more control when it some to trying to avoid giving themselves cavities and other reasons to see a doctor. Her health is as important to him as his is. He huffs, eyes down before looking straight at Ruby again. "No. No, no— Not this time. She put it right into my hands and held on to them... a little too long." That's another thing that happens from time to time. Sam is always if not upfront with Ruby about this cases. "Coffee would be great. Thanks" He smiles. Sometimes it's like she knows him better than himself because he was going to go with water, but now sitting in place for a little while already he feels the drain of the day working into his bones and like coffee would be the best pick me up. He appreciates her for all the little reasons like these.
While he waits, he eats the burger in front of him.

Sam is always adorable, but he's particularly adorable when he's embarrassed or flustered. She can't help but grin broadly at his story. She reaches out and takes his hand, her fingers stroking his palm then down to the inside of his wrist. It's a bit of possessiveness, like claiming him after her awareness that someone else has held his hands. They have to be honest with each other about things like that; otherwise, it'll cause a fight and Ruby doesn't think they see each other nearly enough to fight. She always tells him when someone at the bar has gotten too familiar with her.
Ruby pulls up her own stool behind the bar and sits across from Sam, picking at her fries while the coffee brews. "Mr. Wiśniewski is talking about hiring someone to help out here. Security, stocking the bar, stuff like that. Just part time on weekends." She leaves that dangling like an offer, which it is. Ruby has already spoken to her boss a little about this.

When she pulls up, he turns to his three to give her his sole attention, swallowing the little bit he had been chewing. Her offer takes him by surprise, though he smiles without a second thought. The two of them had also been recently talking about Sam picking extra work. It was even his idea. "I- You're saying you miss me that much that you spoke to Mr. Wiśniewski on my behalf. I mean of course I miss you, too, and I would love to work side by side with you. Tell him I said yes." Did she ever doubt he would accept in a heartbeat?

They're getting by, but if Sam could pick up a little bit of extra work, they might be able to put some money back for a rainy day. The conversation with Mr. W. had come up quite organically, but Ruby had jumped at the chance when she'd seen it. She gives him a slightly crooked grin. "That's exactly what it was. I told him I missed you far too much to continue and he graciously offered," she tells him with a teasing tone in her voice. "Also he needs a weekend bouncer and it has to be someone I get along with. It helps that you can tell when I'm overwhelmed without me having to say anything to you."

Anything he can do to make it so they're not just in the black (getting by) but financially secure -- well, she needn't even ask because Sam wants to do it. He would be lying to himself if he didn't admit some days the way she earns the cash while he focuses on his studies didn't bother him. He's in. Her smile brings out his. "Funny. I have no one other than you to tell, but I miss you all too much too." That's a little white lie. They have friends on and off the campus, but who is counting. He chuckles because it sounds Mr. W to give in like that. Sam finds he gives in all the time just like that. "That's me. My job is to make sure my girl isn't overwhelmed." It's actually pretty sweet she thinks of him that way, he finds.
no subject
He's supposed to focus on his studies; that's why they're here. He can take care of them financially later after he's finished with school. They do have friends on and off campus, but Ruby is pretty sure that their friends would get tired of listening to the other swoon about each other. She presses a kiss to his cheek when he says he misses her too. "In that case, I got very lucky getting an expert in the job."
no subject
It's easier to say focus on his studies than done, but just as well it's part of a spoken promise to her and he would never break that. Their friends don't seem too tired of them yet. These two - especially Sam - have been in the honeymoon phase since they started dating and maybe he is blind to their friends opinions. Her kiss to his cheek earns a wide smile where his dimples grow a little red. She has a way with words that make him fluster too. Expert, she says. "Think I got fairly lucky, too. I have the best girl looking out for me." He huffs, knowing what he says to be somewhat humorous and at the same time knowing it's only because of her either of them are lucky at all.
no subject
She knows that and there are lots of things that Ruby doesn't believe in (like the Easter Bunny and Santa Claus) but she does believe in Sam Winchester. Ruby has never been much of an extrovert, so she's equally as blind to other people's opinions where Sam is concerned. They're both almost deliriously happy and that's all she cares about. "Nerd," she says with a slightly sheepish smirk. "this girl says you should eat," she tells him, getting up to pour him a cup of coffee. "I can't have my bouncer fainting from hunger," she jokes with him as she sits back down and takes a bite of her burger.
no subject
He's told her this but he believed in Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny until he was eleven and a half. The thing though is that he would believe in Ruby till the day he dies in turn. She's all he needs to be happy. There's a little quiet for a moment as he packs down the food before his eyes turns up to hers again, smiling at her. "So- Nobody's around yet. So tell me a little about how your day was. I'd loved to hear it all." She didn't just advocate for his new job, surely.
no subject
That's one of the things that Ruby loves about Sam. He wants to believe in things and in people. His belief in her is endearing; it makes her melt a little when she thinks about it. Her life is better now than she ever imagined it might be and that's because of him. The quiet time to eat is nice, companionable. "It was good," she starts. "Slept in. Did some laundry and the dishes. I didn't have time to fold it before I came here though," she warns him. Their clean laundry is sitting in a basket on the chair in their room. "I watched one of those stupid real housewives shows. I'm pretty sure I could have my own real housewife show."
no subject
He believes she wants to believe in people as well whether she has trouble showing it or not. Proof in the matter is in how they ended up dating at all when he was that awkward teenager once who needed a little help in asking to sit next to her in the library, much less ask her to prom. Somehow they're still together. He would agree life with her is the best he's ever lived. Hearing her talk about her day fills in as the relaxation he needs after another long day, and he smiles at what she tells him. "Yeah? Was it a good sleep?" It sounds like it was and part of him wishes he could have stayed with her or watched her that morning instead of go to class. Of course he would have that chance on the weekend. He chuckles because he knows what unfolded laundry looks like. "Don't worry. I'll take care of it." First chance he gets. Probably will do half when they get home, half in the morning.
"Well, you're full of surprises. You want to be famous?" He grins, dimples on display, only joking in part. He knows she wouldn't really want to on a stupid TV show (her words, which he entirely agrees with) just to famous.

There's a difference between believing in Sam and believing in other people. However, it's nice that he wants to think she's better than she (thinks she) really is. She's pretty sure they're still together because she's smart enough to know a good thing when she sees it. She's definitely not letting Sam go. She shrugs one shoulder at his question. "It was missing my favorite heater, but I have a very good imagination. It worked out," she tells him with a mischievous grin. She wishes he could have stayed as well, but she would have booted him out of bed if he'd tried. He has to go to class and she knows that. It's part of her job making sure that he does the things he needs to do. During the weekend though, she fully expects him to stay in bed with her all day. "Best. Sam. Ever." Housework isn't always her strong suit.
She snorts a little at him. "No. I was just commenting on how deeply stupid and useless the housewives are. I'm not sure what they do that actually qualifies as housewifery."
no subject
Unfortunately, he's gonna have his doubts about himself or how good he really is. He's never any questions about her though. She is the light in his life. He would smile if she told him she is not letting him go. Ultimately he feels the same way. "Who would that be?" The faintest of smiles slips out despite his best attempt to keep his amusement from showing. He knows very well that is one of his pet names. On weekends, he's content being her favorite heater. "Yeah?" He smiles a little more at being declared 'Best'. "I try." It's always been a spoken and unspoken promise to her that he will help where ever he can.
He chuckles with the way she declares that. He shrugs having little to no reason to disagree. He gives her response a little thought before asking, "So what would you like to doing?" Truth is, he's much more interested in that.

It's probably one of those human nature things. She grins at his question and lifts one shoulder in a shrug. "Special model. Black and Decker doesn't make it." She gives him an exaggerated thinking face. "You know...I think the company is Winchester. Or something like that," she teases him. Her expression becomes a little more serious and she nods. "Good effort," she assures him.
She actually has to think about his question a second before she gives him an 'I don't know' gesture. "Halfway decent bartender. Excellent girlfriend. I'm pretty easy when it comes to ambition."
no subject
Really, it is. Sam wouldn't think he does it but he clings to his humanity even in this life of his. In any case, it's not her joke per se (because he's not a car guy), but her grin and exaggerated expression that puts his smile over the top. "Yeah. Yeah, I think I heard of the company. They do a lot of exclusivity dealings with the Rose company, don't they?" That's Ruby's family name. He plays along because they're a good team. He rubs the back of his neck because there's only so much he can take before her assurance flusters him.
Seriously, not that he wants to push her, but she should think about it more than that. "Take your time. You can tell me when you think of something."
no subject
She laughs softly as his joke. "Indeed they do. it's quite a deal that Winchester-Rose thing." They're a fantastic team and she loves when he gets flustered. She'll back off a little though. After all, she doesn't want to make him uncomfortable.
"Aye aye, Captain," she tells him, dipping a fry in ketchup. Really, he's the ambitious one and she's okay with that. Ruby just wants the both of them to be happy.
