Did you want me to bring anything else back while I'm here?
[because he wants to be diligent! also, because there is one thing to clarify:]
I found that book series you mentioned. Which one was next on your list? Three or four? I'm staring at one called The Passions of Santos and another with The Passions of Steve and Brenda on the cover.
Sammy was no a stranger to new places but he loved it most when he found himself in a place he had visited before. Itinere by far was his favorite, of course, but like a memory it only grew clearer when his eyes adjusted to his surroundings and he opted to look around and poke his head into a few of the rooms around the bunker for signs of life. First was the kitchen knowing that is the most likely place find to Dean, but when it comes up empty, he takes an apple and looks more. Eventually, he lands on Ruby's room where he chooses to knock instead of peak inside with an inquisitive "Ruby?" to reach her if she was in there.
Surely enough, he could hear the slightest bit of movement on other side and feel his nerves take over because he was about to see Ruby and she him. Since the last time they saw each other, he grew like a weed. In other ways, too. Remembering her now, he thought she was more attractive than he could see before. That said, his hands run down the front of his shirt to smooth the creases when he grows a little self conscious and he wants to look presentable.
Both Ruby and Dean are glad that Itinere is a good memory for him even if he doesn't really remember it all the time. It'd been important to both of them that Sammy make good memories here. For Dean, it had been about giving Sammy some of the childhood that he couldn't have back home. For Ruby, it had been about making him feel confident and happy. The knock cues Ruby to pay more attention to everything outside the room which makes her hesitate answering the door. The scent and feel tells her it's Sam at the door (besides that: Dean never knocks) but he doesn't smell quite the same or feel nearly as powerful. She grabs a pair of jeans off the chair and slips them on before she answers the door in one of Sam's shirts.
Shes' not entirely surprised to see a much younger version of Sammy than she saw last. There's only a touch of surprise in her expression when she first sees him. That disappears so she can drunk in all the changes in him. She reaches out to ruffle his hair (he's the same height as her now). "You got tall," she tells him, rolling with the change because what else is she supposed to do? Besides, at the end of the day, it's all Sam anyway.
Sammy was glad to have had a chance to get to know Ruby the first time around and see Dean and find out they make it to curb some of his lingering fears that one day they will just wind up dead, no one to mourn them. Now at sixteen, he's at the age now that he can see better what Dean has been doing all along and he's thankful Dean did so much for him when he was young but he's also not a kid anymore. Ruby did make him feel confident and happy and because of that she was his first crush. He's better for having known her even though the memories were locked away in his dreams back home. He's changed in subtle ways because of her too. Not that he would openly say it, but he looks at girls more. That hesitation she takes in opening the door provides him more to time look down at his appearance and fuss with his shirt more, his sleeves when she actually answers and brings him to stop with a nervous sideways smile.
He definitely notices the too big of shirt when she answers and remembers with no trouble that it's his -- twenty year old Sam's shirt -- which causes his eyes look at hers more directly, cheeks to go pink. He wishes he could tell her she should wear something that fits her better that doesn't fall off her shoulder but his tongue gets tied on how it sounds in his head. Instead he tries to focus on being happy to see her again. His head bobs with her head pat, hair sticks up. "Yeah. Almost as tall as, um, Dean," he sounds almost a little proud, meaning twenty year old Dean, of course, but realizing just as quickly as he thinks about the difference there's probably no difference because of his brother's age anymore.
He gives her a curious look. "How long have I been gone? You don't look like you changed much." To which he is glad.
[At the break of dawn on Valentines morning, Sam let Ruby drift somewhere between awake and asleep when he quietly slipped out of their bedroom. He wanted to make sure when she awoke that she knew just how special she was to him. He places a kiss to her temple when he sprawls back on the bed,]
Morning, Sunshine! You were right. I couldn't get you out of my head all last night.
[Laid out in the center of the bed is a heart shaped tray with chocolates as well as wine glasses for her and him, filled to the brim with whip cream and berries. It doesn't matter to him if they eat it all. All that matters is that she knows how much she's been on his mind lately.]
[Ruby loves that space of tiem that she's somewhere in the middle of sleep and wakefulness with Sam curled up next to her. Something registers when he gets out of bed and she pouts but stays curled up in the warmth of the blankets. When he sprawls next to her she turns into him, humming a bit like a purring cat. ]
Exactly where I like to stay.
[ Her words are a sleepy murmur. She opens her eyes and immediately sees the set up. She pushes herself into a sitting position, a smile curving her lips. She runs one hand through her hair and looks to Sam. When he goes into the bathroom, he'll find that she was busy while he was asleep. There's a surprise awaiting him. Sh leans in to press a kiss against his lips. ] Happy Valentines Day.
[Seeing Ruby sleep is a rare occurrence so he watches her stir with adoration in his eye when he rejoins her under the covers. He apologizes in case he disturbed her with any of his movement and scoots next to her. Yes, he's exactly where he wants to be.]
[After she has a second to take it in, he blindly reaches for the tray to pull closer to them, unable to take his eyes off of her.] I'm partial to having you by my side, not just in my head. [They should eventually go shower together and Sam can find the love notes with her. Later when Ruby is ready to remove them, she would most definitely find out he left romantic thoughts of her on the other side. 'My Best Friend.' 'You make my laugh.' 'Bold.' 'Honest.' 'Beautiful.' 'Don't hide your true eyes.']
[He returns her kiss with one or two more of his own.]
[The notes that Ruby left him in the bathroom make him smile. In response though, Sam sticks his own out and sticks over top of each and every note she left. Beautiful. Have my back. Complete with you. He pours his soul out on paper.]
[ She will keep every single one of those notes. The next morning, he'll find an origami swan with his name on one of the wings propped up next to his alarm clock. When he chooses to unfold it, he'll find a letter that she stayed up writing the night before while he slept. The letter tells all of the things that Ruby has a hard time saying out loud: He has given her the kind of life and love that she never even imagined was possible for someone like her, he makes her a better person, he is the love of her very long existence. She also writes I love you several times across the page and signs it (almost) Mrs. Ruby Winchester ]
Ruby really isn't so sure about the whole idea of a bachelorette party, but Lucy had insisted it was tradition, promised she'd keep it tame, and pointed out that the boys were having one. They might as well have their own version. Finally, Ruby had consented.
At Lucy's urging, all the women had dressed up for a night out and congregated at the Houndstooth. There's a sign on the door that says 'Closed for Private Party'. Lucy has strung garlands andstreamer, scattered confetti, and floated balloons. She's got a dance-worthy playlist bumping and has prepared a meal mostly consisting of cheese, strawberries, and fries. There are even boozy milkshakes. The decor might not be Ruby's style, but the food is. She's got bubbly cocktails for everyone, including Ruby but hers include a long pour of Monster Drunk. The karaoke machine is also set up for anyone who wants to sing. The evening activities will include temporary tattoos and pink hair dye (promised to wash out in a few washes). As promised, Lucy has kept it tame. There will be no half naked men (unless the bachelors crash).
The party is small, consisting of just Donna, Lucy, Mary, and Ruby, in order to comply with another of Ruby's demands. Ruby arrives last to a flurry of (penis shaped) glitter and a 'Happy Bachelorette!' greeting from Lucy. She presses a drink into her hand, drapes a sash across her that says Bride-to-be, and gently nudges Ruby over to the bar already laid out with food. For a moment, Ruby is clearly uncomfortable with this much attention focused on her, but once everyone starts digging into the food, the alcohol cuts the nerves and they start having fun.
And Jack. As the bride's man of honor, he felt he couldn't let Ruby down when he had the choice of attending the bachelorette party. It started with helping Lucy turn her fun ideas into a reality. He cut out some of the streamers with her, helped blow up the balloons, and volunteered as a pair of hands for tattoo duty. The penis imagery never bothers him a bit. As far as he can see, everyone is having a good time with it.
The hair dye he is on board with. It is suggested to him that he can do pink tips or the whole tuft of hair at the front of his head. The decision seems like the biggest he's faced in a while. Rather than make a decision right away; he turns to the person standing closest to him, asking what they're thinking of getting.
Ruby hadn't invited Jack simply because she'd assumed he was going with the boys; however, she's grateful to see him. Lucy had invited Jack while he'd been helping her decorate. As the man of honor, he's got every right to be there if he chooses the women's company over the men's. Lucy had explained to ack that penises were part of the whole bachelorette party tradition. She got everyone penis straws for their drinks as well. She'd considered getting Ruby a penis hat but didn't think that she'd wear it (she's right).
When Jack walks in, Lucy bounces to the door to hug him tightly. Donna smiles and waves at Jack. "Oh. Hey. Hello," she says in greeting. Ruby give him a look of gratitude and once he moves close enough, she bumps him with her shoulder in greeting. "Hey, you," she says quietly and sips her drink (out of her penis straw). "So this is pretty ridiculous," but she doesn't sound upset about it.
Once the hair session starts, Ruby ends up with the ends of her hair dyed pink. Lucy's whole head is bright pink, Donna has streaks and Lucy ruffles a hand through Jack's hair. "I think you should do a streak of it in the front."
Ruby had fallen asleep at some point in the wee hours of the morning. She'd woken up expecting that Sam would still be asleep as well. She pouts to herself a moment before seeing the crane on the nightstand. She reaches out to pick it up, unfolding the wing a bit to find the inscription there in Sam's handwriting.
She remembers very clearly the crane and what she wrote on the inside of it, though she doesn't know if Sam has put the pieces together or if he's just replicating something he's kept for so long. At the inscription's prompting, she considers for a moment where Sam might be then gets out of bed, brushes her teeth, and puts on one of Sam's button-downs before padding barefoot to the library.
"If you don't have fries I'm going back to bed and dragging you with me. There might be punishment," she sing-songs as she steps into the library.
He had put the pieces together a week or so back when he had been
reflecting on how to acknowledge Ruby on Valentine's. It only took checking
his memory box to be sure that the handwriting of his old teacher had, in
fact, been her. That's when the idea hit him to play out the Valentine's
they never got.
He had been to the diner before she had woken. The fries were set in the
oven to maintain some of their original temperature. He greets her with a
smile and a chuckle at her threat. "There's a batch waiting for you with
your name on it." What may come as a surprise when she does get them is
that he had the waitress write Ruby over them in ketchup. No, he does not
think ketchup should be on the side.
As much as he would like to inquire more about the potential punishment,
disappointing her seems cruel.
It wasn't unusual that he texted her to ask if she were already back in town. But it was the first time he wanted to ask her to hang out same day. The many nervious sent messages he had left her contained options like having a night in and ordering pizza or if she had wanted to step outside, they could go to the new diner that had opened in town. Ever since Ruby told him that he could ask her to date properly once he was eight-teen, he couldn't shake the feeling he had to spend more time with her.
After a short amount of time (he couldn't wait any real length of time) without a response, he was compelled to text more:
We can do nothing too.
Sorry if you're still on a hunt. Let me know when you're back.
Ruby had planned to have the hunt wrapped up by now, but things hadn't gone exactly as planned. It's only once she gets in the SUV, a shirt wadded up and duct taped to her bleeding side that she checks her phone to find the text messages from Sam. They make her smile and she doesn't hesitate to text back before she starts the car.
I just finished a hunt. Let's do a night in. I'll order pizza on my way home if you want to meet me there.
She'll get herself stitched up and they'll spend the evening watching movies or talking.
Sam had gone to bed a little restless when Ruby hadn't called. The only reason he got any shut eye was because he told himself it didn't mean any was necessarily wrong-- only that Ruby was busy and it would be fine when she called next.
His eyes were barely open when he answered. His heart already knew there was only one person who'd call this late. His head was catching up. The lamp string was tricky to find in the dark yet his fingers managed to pull the strong to illuminate him. His hair was missing the ruffled look it usually had due to the absence of her fingers. However, the same hair had parts where it was static as a sign he tossed and turned in his sleep without here there. Sam has a smile that shares he had already been dreaming of her.
"I'm glad you called." It didn't matter what the time was. It was not even a question on his mind. Sleep could wait.
Nothing was wrong, but she had been busy with the case. It'd taken her a
bit longer than she'd originally estimated.
She'll make sure to rectify that mussed look when she returns. She likes
when he dreams about her.
"If you need to sleep, I'll let you go. I missed telling you goodnight
though and I didn't want you to worry. Woman in White. I had to convince
her that I was her type."
He rubs the sleep out of his eye with the back of his hand. "No, no-
please. Talk. A few minutes won't change anything. We can still say
goodnight. Still in one piece?" His hand stifles a yawn and he prompts
himself to be more alert.
The corner of his mouth curves into a sleepy, twitch of a grin. What
follows is a sympathetic pull on his lips about what he knows women in
white are usually born from. "How did you manage that? It is good that you
were able to help her pass to the other side."

Four. It's Steve and Brenda, but bring The Passions of Santos too

Valentines Morning
Inside of a crane of his own making (not duck) on the dresser in the room waits the following message in his own hand writing:]
I only have fries for you.
Will you be my Valentine?

After all, she only said they couldn't date just yet. There was nothing said about any form of courting.
