Soulless Situationship
"Shit," Ruby exclaims when she wakes up to an empty room in the middle of the night. She rakes her hand through her hair as she sits up and orients herself. She checks the bathroom, knowing that Souless isn't there. She shoots Dean a text so that he won't wake up in his own room not knowing what's going on. It doesn't take her long to get dressed. She does a location spell to find Sam (she insists she always have some of his hair so she can find him) and is surprised to find he's only a few rooms down. A sinking feeling in her stomach tells her what she's going to find. By the time she's emotionally prepared herself, Sam is ducking out of the room still buttoning up his shirt. Ruby stalks toward him, heels clicking on the sidewalk. "Do you want to go back to the room or am I going to have to drag you and right about now, I really hope you'll say drag you."
She knows that Soulless isn't Sam and she knows that he can't love her the way that Sam does. However, she had thought that they'd come to an understanding. She'd become comfortable enough in their situationship that she'd actually taken a nap she'd really needed without handcuffing him to something. She won't let that happen again. he has to constantly remind herself that she can't trust him; he isn't emotionally involved, and he doesn't care about her. He's not Sam. And he never will be.

The end of the conversation was equally as mutual. He hadn't any reason not to return to his room when Ruby found him. The feeling of being watched was more than enough to cause him to drop what he was doing. The last couple of buttons undone on his shirt meant very little. The breeze from the darkness of the night didn't chill him the way it would a regular person. Similar to how unbothered he was her her threat. For a second he tried to understand why she acted in part hostile but he wasn't coming up with anything. "Don't get your panties in a bunch." His lips thin into a line, knowing what he said was factually incorrect. "I am headed back right now."
He pauses, having never stopped trying to read the situation. "What? Did you think I skipped town?"

"No, Samuel." The way she says his name isn't sexy. "I wasn't concerned about you skipping town. I could have and did do a location spell for that." She's going to let him think about this a little longer. She unlocks their room and stands aside to let him go inside. She sends another text to Dean letting him know that she found Sam.

His look when she informs him how easy it would be to locate him if he skipped town is akin to annoyance. He did not like how she came into possession of his hair. Not that it hurt. Quickly, his expression returns to neutrality. "This is about having sex with somebody else? I don't know what you want me to say. It meant nothing with her." That's supposed to console her.
He neither follows her nor walks beside her. The way back to their shared room is obvious so he's a few steps a head of her naturally. (What a gentlemen. NOT.) She has the key so he waits before he steps in with her allowing him to go first. He goes into the washroom to clean up first before stepping out of it a short while later. His shirt all but abandoned. Maybe he thought somewhere that it was a start on making it up to her. What happened next was up to her.

He can be as annoyed as he wants. She's going to continue to stockpile hair so that she can locate him. The only reason she hasn't tied him up and put a microchip in him so that she can track him with her phone is because Dean won't let her. She'd put it right between his shoulder blades where he couldn't get it out if he wanted (which Dean helpfully pointed out is where they put microchips for dogs; yes, this idea has been discussed ad nauseam). Sam's consolation is met with a glare. They'll discuss this once in the motel room. It'll give her time to rein in her emotions and attempt to approach this more logically and detached.
The fact that he is not allowed to have a key should remind him that he is not allowed to make his own decisions. While Sam is in the shower, Ruby removes her boos and sits on the bed, her back against the headboard. When he steps out of the shower, Ruby looks up at him with disgust in her expression. "I hope you bleached your dick because you've probably got ten different kinds of STDs." She takes a measure, unnecessary breath to get herself back on track. She has to remind herself that he may not care, but he also doesn't understand feelings and attachments "It's not about what it meant to you. Nothing means shit to you, so it's about what it means to me. Besides that, You've probably got sixty different kinds of STDs because I seriously doubt you wore a condom so now I've got to drag your ass to the clinic and get you tested so you don't give those to me."
Sure, she's a demon in a dead body. Any STD doesn't stand a chance against the demon. That is so obviously not the point.

The shower certainly helped to revitalize how his skin felt to the touch. Clean with a mild soap scent. He continues to the single queen mattress and sit to towel off his hair. He's listening.
But he's also heard similar a complaint before. If he could sigh, he would. The urge to roll his eyes is almost too great. Yet a trickle of a thought stops him. What Ruby says about his actions and what it means to her begs him to consider that. This might be the first time it truly clicks into place that it isn't just his soul that Ruby cares about.
"Me... or just the Sam you claim isnt here?" He uncharacteristically finds himself unable to hold in. He motions his hand to signal she has the floor. "Please. Don't hold anything back. I'll get tested."
no subject
Ruby watches him sit on the bed shirtless. She's still hurt and watching him half naked isn't going to make it better, but it gives her a nice view while she's nursing her hurt feelings. Good call on not rolling his eyes, it would have added injury and though he may not realize it or care, he's done enough of that today.
She sighs then hesitates. "If you use this against me, I will chain you up, shove a catheter and IV into you and never let you lose again." She pauses again, gathering the courage to allow herself to be vulnerable. It's only because he was unable to hold it in, he sounded a little hurt or jealous, and he offered to go get tested without further threats and warning that she's even trying. "I don't know how to separate my feelings for Sam. I care about--" if she's going to be vulnerable, she might as well go for it," I love every incarnation of Sam...you...that I can imagine. I just like some of them more than others. So yes, it's about what it means to me when you do things like this. You might not care about anything, but after hundreds of years, I finally do and I will fight to hold onto to every single part of you, including what's right in front of me."
She will make good on her threat if he makes fun of her right now or later.

He had thought maybe his shirtlessness would elicit a change of mind from Ruby. His expectations shifted as she contined to shed light on the situation. Never in a million years could he have known anything she felt without it so clearly spelled out. He could respect her vulnerability, if not for the selfish part where he comes to know she cares for him.
Justifiably, he takes a moment to respond. He's more focused on how not to incur her wraith. It sounded uncomfortable what she threatened to do if he messed up again.
"Yes. So, what do you propose we do? After the test, do I just sleep with you? Is this a exclusivity thing?"
no subject
Ruby would much rather he pause and take his time answering her. He's not completely stupid then because while she'd rather he cooperate voluntarily, she doesn't mind inflicting some discomfort on him.
Ruby doesn't groan at his words but she does scrub her hands over her face in a gesture of frustration, but also to buy herself some time. She has her doubts about whether he is actually willing to be monogamous or if he's simply placating her. She lets her hands drop from her face. "Yes. That's exactly what I'm proposing." Ball is in his court.
no subject
He's not sure what it is himself. Part of it is certainly an act to keep on his part to keep Ruby and the discomfort at bay. The other part of it has no name he can even describe. At least in terms of what this is. As for the rest, he considers the deal with remote interest. Clearly, he can't deny his resistance to being controlled but the proposal is pretty clear. There's nothing unfamiliar about it. If anything, it's just as easy. (Sorry, Ruby.)
He looks at her silently for a minute. "Fine. Let me sleep on it." He won't give her the satisfaction of a yes right away even if it is one. "If you have any other rules to add, don't think I'll go along with them easily. You're... way too concerned with me." He points at her as if to accuse her with a crime and not just some mild annoyance.
no subject
To be fair, sleeping with him started because it was easier than denying herself. It was also a means to an end in terms of trying to reduce the collateral damage Sam has to deal with when his soul was back in his body. While she's aware that his soul might have misgivings about her having sex with his unsouled body, she knows that he'll have issues with the body having sex with multiple people.
"Are you suggesting that I put all my rules on the table right now?" She hums a little and rolls her eyes. "Yes. Sue me. I care."
no subject
She was an easy lay at the time, but something had always been there. Perhaps it was best that someone actually cared how many women he lied with.
He tilts his head, in a way suggesting that she proceed. He wouldn't tolerate her continued addition of rules either. "Lay them on me. Just don't expect me to agree to all them." Some compromise will need to be made. He looks her up and down as if about to say something but chooses not to. He rather liked the cute way her eyes rolled.

Ruby has tried to keep her expectations of Soulless low. She's aware that he could hurt her in ways that will take time to recover from and she's trying to minimize that kind of hurt by not expecting too much of him. That way, she can be pleasantly surprised by anything good he chooses to do.
She hesitates, trying to figure out what's really important to her. She hadn't expected him to agree to anything. "Let me know where and when you're going somewhere, even if it's just to get coffee. It's only polite." Her mind races, but her suggestions are a bit slower to come. "We have got to keep the killing humans thing in check." Another pause. "I think that's it..."
Then just to keep the conversation open: "Have you got anything for me?" Rules wise, she means.
no subject
That hesitation, however brief, is the most telling thing he can lock on to about how unprepared she is. That's one way to look at it. It's not so much that he agrees right away but he's aware that she can be a nuisance - not just to his activities but to his own ability to stop her from being in his mind - if there is no discussion. Perhaps the two of them need a moment to be allowed to think. Of course he's well aware that more conditions wouldn't do him any favors.
His look remains neutral, essentially as good as a frown at her suggestions thus far. "That's all?" He repeats back to her, a calculation to lock her in to those terms. He still hasn't made the conscious decision to agree or not agree.
So far the terms are: exclusive sex, informing her about his whereabouts and killing regular people less. His forehead gives away that he is thinking and perhaps a little urked. But his belief that there is breathing room in the lack of push to have to be in her company all the time that gives him a sense of relief. "You let me continue to hunt without your presence whenever or where ever you're not wanted." Some places like Samuel's storehouse have wards against demons. It's very well known that Samuel doesn't want to work with hunters that are not family, too. Ruby is only safe as long as she doesn't let on to what she really is. Though he can't explain in certain terms that the phantom butterflies in the pit of his stomach encompass the worry that Ruby might be found out.

She's very good at being a nuisance and she can be even more if he forces her hand. He might be strong and very tolerant of pain, but he's still human and she's got centuries of experience breaking humans if necessary. Ruby may choose to act human more often than not, and she may have some human emotions, but she's still a very old, very powerful demon and witch.
Yeah, she's aware what that neutral look means. "As long as we're still discussing this, that's not all. It's a negotiation, Sweetie, not an instructional lecture." Yeah, that inclusion of calling him 'sweetie' is a bit of a warning and a hint that she knows what he's trying to lock her into.
He can be irked all he wants; it's about time he experiences a little bit of what he evokes in her. She arches an eyebrow at his 'terms'. "Wanted by whom? We've already discussed your wants, thoughts, and impulses can't be trusted. When you prove to me that you can be trusted to abide by the conditions we set down here, I'm fine with allowing you some space to yourself." She's fine with stalking from a distance when he's working with Samuel. It's not so much about respecting Samuel's wishes as it is about not wanting to have to kill Sam and Dean's grandfather when he, inevitably, tries to kill her.

His own memories and assumptions do likely cause him to underestimate her. She most definitely comes across as more human than she did than when they first met. Other times not. He is acutely aware of the discomfort she can cause after shes shown him what the consequences are. Never has he seen her have to use more force than necessary outside of those consequences of his or the hunts they've been on in memory.
He motions for her to continue if there is more. "Well, the floor is yours." So far there isn't really any push back because she's listed the ones he's sure are non negotiable. It is not an instructional lecture but neither is it one to leave anything out. Part of the exception he had aimed had been a little bit of his own ability work alone but her words make it clear that is another non negotiable. Still, he didn't blink or bat an eyelash. "And how long might it take to earn your trust if I follow these conditions? Let's say when I'm working with the Campbells then." He'd just work with them more if he wanted the space. Ruby could watch from afar all she liked. This version wouldn't care too much if Samuel or Ruby came to a head (that's a lie) but it would certainly hinder his desire to hunt. The Campbell family had lifetimes of intel than he could find on his own.

If he could be trusted, it wouldn't be non-negotiable. Trust is a big deal for Ruby because most of her existence, she couldn't trust anyone. She considers his question. "A few weeks, but be aware that it can all backslide too." She sighs a little. "I don't want to be your keeper, your jailer, or your babysitter, Sam. I would like to have a non-toxic relationship, but I don't know if you're capable of that. That being said, I will be whatever I have to be to protect you from yourself. That's true whether we get your soul back or not, which goes back to the fact that the soul isn't the only part of you I care about."
